Closing For Refurbishment
From 30th March until early July 2015, the Bar Convent is undergoing an exciting transformation as part of the Living Heritage Project. We’re installing a brand new exhibition experience, new gift shop, completing the refurbishment of our guesthouse and conference rooms, and improving access.
Please note that, as we upgrade the Guest House we are not able to accommodate guests at this time. Many of our guests already appreciate the improvements that we have made to many of our rooms and so our plans are to refurbish the rest of the guest house to the same high standard. The refurbishment will provide us with more en-suite facilities, beautifully decorated rooms and 2 superior rooms created by a celebrity designer. As a charity, we are still committed to providing affordable accommodation in the centre of York and so, as well as our excellent value for money en-suite rooms, we will still retain 4 refurbished shared facilities rooms at very competitive rates to enable everyone to visit our beautiful convent and city.
We look forward to welcoming you back and showing you our new rooms and facilities from July onwards. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Our customers constantly tell us that staying at The Bar Convent is a fabulous and totally unique experience.
We were a finalist for Best B&B in York: The People’s Choice in Visit York’s tourism awards in May 2014. We were also awarded a 2013 Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor as a result of receiving consistently positive Customer Feedback.
Customers regularly tell us that they appreciate our convenient location, flexibility, room cleanliness and excellent value for money accommodation – as well as our delicious cooked or continental breakfasts, for which we were awarded a coveted Visit England Breakfast Award in 2014.
Our location is ideal. We’re just around the corner from York Railway Station and next to the historic city walls at Micklegate Bar, making it an easy 5-10 minute walk into the City Centre. See our location page for further details and maps.
Regardless of whether your visit is for business or pleasure, you will receive a warm welcome from our Guest House Manager, Lesley Baines or her team, who will show you our facilities and settle you into your accommodation. We provide privacy, with a strong sense of old fashioned service and friendship in our magnificent heritage home. If you need advice, (e.g. recommendations on where to eat, directions etc) please ask, we regularly help our residents with all sorts of things.
When you have finalised your travel arrangements, it is appreciated if you would kindly call us with your expected time of arrival. Please telephone the Housekeeper's Office on 01904 464902 during office hours (9am - 5pm) or leave a message on our answer phone and we will call you back to confirm. If you’re outside of this time (i.e. between 5 – 9.30pm), call our Evening Receptionist on 07840 345544.
If you arrive between 5pm and 9.30pm the front door will be locked for security reasons, so please ring the door bell located on the left hand side of the door and the Evening Receptionist will welcome you, if you’re struggling to be heard, call our Evening Receptionist on 07840 345544.
A continental style breakfast is included in the room price and served in our café. This includes juice, choice of cereals, toast, croissants, yogurt and fresh fruit.
A full English breakfast is also available. This is included in the price of all en-suite accommodation and is available to all other guests for a small additional charge of £5.50 per person.
Unlike many other accommodation providers, we also offer a fully equipped kitchen for guests to use, which is ideal for evening snacks when you just feel like a few home comforts during your stay. This is particularly useful for families with small children or business travellers who want the facilities a home would provide.
For those who prefer to spoil themselves we offer home cooked food in our legendary Café for lunches, morning coffee and afternoon tea. We have an excellent bean-to-cup coffee machine serving Fairtrade Latte, Cappuccino and Mocha coffees to leisurely drink in our peaceful garden, cafe or just take back to your room with a good book.
York has a vast selection of places to eat out, so we simply offer a selection of homemade cold plated meals in the evening, which can be ordered if you prefer to stay in for a change. Please speak to the Housekeeper who will be happy to help.
